PostSubject: Son leaving for MEPS this morning...   October 21st 2013, 6:38 am

Ok, It's 6:30AM and I've already been up for over 3 hours. I can't help it.

My son is leaving for MEPS today (Military Entrance Processing Station) and will be shipping out tomorrow to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri for Basic Training. I know he will only be gone for 10 weeks before I/We (my wife and I) see him again but I'm fucking stressed, guys. I know it isn't a huge deal. He isn't the first person to join the military and he won't be the last but this will be the first time in 20 years that I won't have access to my boy and being I/We had him so young I just straight up feel like I'm losing a son, brother and friend. Fuck. This is harder than I though. I can't even believe I'm vomiting this shit up in public right now...

Anyway. I just needed to actually type something out. I don't do the stupid facebook thing and I've been up for hours by myself. I had to release some tension...

PS - Still fucking miss you, Frank. What a shit week. I'm gonna go make my boy breakfast.

See Dalt, that right there, your post, is why this forum is so great! Sure, the community has been rocked hard by the nerfs, the terrible Dakota and worst of all Frank's passing, but fact that you feel like you can post up your feelings and vent a little. That just shows how strong this community really is!

Cheers to you, even if you don't find much solace in our words, it just helps to have somewhere to be able to vent and we're happy to be there when you do.

Your son will be fine. He is going to meet tons of new peeps. He's going to get banged up a lot, but he's going to live and learn. Just know that your boy's becoming a man and you should be proud.

It's cool to see a parent that cares this much about their kid. I work in rough neighborhood where most parents don't give a hoot about their kids. Your kid is lucky to have a great mom/dad like you Dalt.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement guys. I'm so proud of my son and I'm extremely happy for him. This is a good thing. I'm just having such a mixed bag of feelings right now. Up until this morning I had no problem with him leaving. Now I just keep thinking about everything I could have or should have told/taught him in the past 20 years that I might have forgot. I just hope my wife and I prepared him well.

Jeez. Ok. I've got to keep my shit together... Time to man up.

So we just dropped him off. He is on his way to Fort Hamilton for processing and then he will spend a night in a hotel with the other enlistees and tomorrow morning he gets sworn in and it's off to reception and then Missouri. Me and the wife kept our shit together and we sent him off tear free, for the most part. I did not want him leaving upset.

We said we loved him and told him how proud we are of him and with that he got on the bus and never looked back, And I'm glad he didn't. I cannot wait to see my boy again and see the man he is going to become.

Thanks for listening everyone. Somehow letting this all out is relaxing. This community rocks.

I feel for ya Daltigoth, I don't know what I'd do if my little girl grew up and decided she wanted to do that. I'd probably end up crying and everything because she's my little girl and she's the only one I'll ever have.

Fort lost in the woods. He's going at the perfect time of year for our area here in Missouri. He will have a couple cold days during PT but most of the time will be 50-80 degree weather for this time of year. I can't remember for sure but I think that flw is woman and men's basic which is always ALOT easier. I had buddies that went to AIT with me at fort sill that had basic at FLW and they had a good time with the female interaction. Also sounded like they didn't get smoked near as often as we did at fort sill.

Also they WILL get to make phone calls occasionally. We had pay phones we got to use almost every weekend. Then again our platoon never fucked up or came in last. If his platoon messes up a lot they won't get as many phone calls but I promise you that communication is much stronger then it use to be.

Just tell em to never come in first or last when doing anything. Just keep head down and follow orders and you will never get picked out as being "high speed" or my favorite "waste of a nut"...

Oh and be sure to tell him that the hotel he's staying at should treat him like royalty and if they don't to let the people at meps know cause the hotels get huge contracts for all the people they have stay before their off to basic.

Hmm what else can I tell ya ..... oh tell em not to throw like a pussy in the grenade pit cause his drill sergeant will slam him to the ground (to cover his body from shrapnel) if his throw doesn't go a safe distance. I saw a couple kids get really fucked up from being slammed cause they froze up when throwing.... you would think people would treat it like a hot potato but a lot of people surprisingly held onto it way too long...pull and throw. None of that cooking it shit.

A relative of mine watched his son go off at age 18 to be a Marine. It wasn't easy. But he went to the graduation and we had a great "welcome home/congratulations" party when they all came home. He even made a killer slide show set to some patriotic music. You'll make it through this and before you know it, you'll be shaking his hand at graduation.

That mentality is usually only a Marine thing. I honestly never had issues with people other then a couple DI that were some bad dudes but they flaunted it a little too much which in turn made everyone hate them including the other DI

I joined during the shit storm . I could have got up to 72k for being a fire support specialist on a 6 year enlistment. I wasn't willing to join for that long though.

New day, I feel much better. I do not know why yesterday hit me so hard. I was numb all day. I couldnt take comfort in anything even knowing that this was a good thing for him and how proud I am.

Then at 9 last night we got a phone call from the Hilton near Ft Hamilton. It was Kevin and he was having a good ole time with the other enlistee's playing poker and using sugar packets as money. They watched the Giants game and played Xbox. (Xbox in a hotel?!) So after that phone call me and my wife instantly felt better. I was able to eat. Go watch some "gas Chamber" raw footage on youtube and laugh. And generally was finally able to relax and feel good about everything.

This morning my wife decided she wanted to go to see him take the oath (I was unsure if we were able to ot not, we got a lot of conflicting stories) So we went to meps and waited... and waited. and waited. And then we waited some more. 9am, 10am, 11am. Finally at 12:30 the boys came in, They took their oath. (My wife got yelled at for taking a photo outside the oath room! lol) and then we were to goto the briefing room and wait more.

Which we did. For 2 more hours. Then they took my boys fingerprints and he came up as some asian boy. haha. So they had to rectify that. After some more time they asked all the parents to leave meps and go outside.

We waited outside and after 20 mins the recruits came out (after signing their final contract) and we briefly allowed to hug him, take  a fast photo and they were off on the shuttles to Laguardia for their flight.

Get this. Now he is being sent to Fort Jackson in South Carolina. Not sure why they changed it the last day but that is the deal now. We were also told they'd be back for Christmas, Though at that poiunt theyll only be in Week 7 1/2 or week 8. So I dont see how that is supposed to work.

I'll have all my answers soon enough when the DI sends us the packet in a few weeks.

Anyway, Thanks to everyone for listening and some great stories (Thanks Art! We discussed the gas chamber last night on the phone.) I hope I didn't overlook anyone that replied here. if so I apologize. It's been a stressful two days and after 8 hours at meps I'm exhausted. I wanted to pop on here and give everyone an update.

Fun Fact: At 20yos, my son is three years older than my wife and I were when we had him!

Yep you go home for Christmas even in basic . And fort Jackson is the best place to go. Its referred to as relaxin jackson . Also its men and womans and that keeps pt from getting too crazy. Yes I sound sexist but fact is we didn't run near as far or near as hard when woman did pt with us in my experience.

Yo daltigoth, I'm a former naval officer. I got my ass kicked by marines at officer candidate school long ago.

You should be proud for him and trust the system. Tell him every day it doesn't get easier, he just gets better.

Training is just that, training. He will meet some of the worst people and the best people there. Tell him to not stress out about anything that can't fail him out of his class.

Just wanted to offer up myself if you wanted to ask any questions or had concerns. Trust me, I gave my guys shit when I got a call from their parents, lol! The most common topics were about education. I hope he uses tuition assistance during his active duty time and saves his gi bill. I have my gi bill money laying around. I will probably use it to get a phd or something one day.

Congrats again!
